Mountain huts and stazzi

The mountains are not only hard work, they are also rest and good company. Find the stazzi (traditional shepherds' stone shelters) between Scanno, Villalago and Pescasseroli.

For now the hut pages are only in Italian: Rifugi e stazzi

How to use a stazzo

  • Nobody runs the always-open stazzi: volunteers look after them. Use them and leave them clean. Take your rubbish back down with you.
  • There is usually no spring nearby, only a rainwater tank: boil the water before cooking with it. Bring your own drinking water.
  • To sleep you need a sleeping bag and a mat.
  • For stazzi with keys, book before you set off: if you go up without, you will find it locked.
  • Inside the National Park, no fires outdoors.
